Access Community Therapists is strongly committed to support people with developmental disabilities to live healthy and full lives in their communities. We provide the occupational and physical therapy services to maximize participation, enhance independence and maintain mobility.
We also assess and make recommendations for home safety equipment, wheelchairs, and specialized transfer and walking aids.
Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injury (paraplegia and quadriplegia) involves damage to the spinal cord that results in partial or total loss of motor and sensory function. The Access team has extensive experience and knowledge assisting people with spinal cord injury to live healthy lives in community.
Occupational therapists, Physiotherapists and Registered Nurses with wound specialization provide services for people with spinal cord injury throughout British Columbia. OT’s prescribe specialized wheelchairs, home and vehicle modifications and equipment to maximize independence and for prevention of pressure wounds. PT’s support physical skills for wheeling and transfers, as well as pain management. Our nurses are expert in bowel and bladder management as well as prevention and treatment of pressure wounds.
Traumatic Brain Injury
Injury to the brain from traumatic injury or lack of oxygen can result in a physical and cognitive problems, ranging from concussion to severe brain injury. Access occupational therapists aided by rehabilitation assistants are skilled in assisting people with traumatic brain injury to reach their potential. Our team utilizes a wide range of standardized cognitive assessment and rehabilitation tools.
As people age, challenges can arise which interfere with safe and healthy living in home and community. Our OT’s and PT’s can provide a wide variety of services in the home or residential setting including the prescription of wheelchairs and specialized seating, provision of bathroom safety, beds and accessibility equipment.
